Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

Forum Topic: Male Pattern Baldness

Users:Hathaway, a urologist, shared his experience with male pattern baldness and his treatment journey. I'm interested in discussing my experiences with hair loss and male pattern baldness, and how they compare to other options available.

Hi everyone,

I'm a male with a pattern baldness and I'm considering using finasteride to combat this issue.

Thanks for your insights and insights on your question!

I have some concerns about the treatment of male pattern baldness. First of all, what's your experience with Finasteride (Propecia/Proscar) or hair loss treatment? Also, do you have any advice for people considering using it?

Also, is there anything like a generic version of finasteride? I would like to know if there are generic options available that don't have a generic version of finasteride.

Its great to hear you have some advice on treating male pattern baldness!

Hi Healthy Hair,

First of all, its good to hear you have some advice on treating hair loss. Finasteride is an effective treatment option that can help manage hair loss effectively, and can also be used for the prevention of hair loss.

However, as with any medication, its important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any treatment, especially if you have a history of hair loss or other medical conditions. It's also important to use finasteride and its generic versions for a safe and effective treatment.

Also, its always good to talk to your healthcare provider about the potential risks and benefits before starting any treatment, especially if you have a history of hair loss.

Its always best to read up on the potential risks and benefits of finasteride and discuss them with your healthcare provider before starting any hair loss treatment.

Doctor

I know what you're going through and am interested in discussing your experience with male pattern baldness. I am also on Propecia/Proscar and finasteride. However, I don't think I would recommend using Finasteride or Propecia for hair loss. If anyone has any advice on the treatment of hair loss, please share them with you.

Doctor,Hathaway

Hello Healthy Hair,

I had a similar experience with Propecia/Proscar in my early 20's. I used Finasteride and Propecia, and both worked well for me. However, I was concerned about the side effects of Finasteride, particularly for the hair loss and hair growth. I also thought I might want to consult with a doctor to discuss the risks and benefits of this treatment, especially for the male pattern baldness. So, here is what I learned:

Finasteride is a synthetic drug that works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is a hormone that is responsible for hair loss and male pattern baldness. Finasteride works by reducing DHT levels, and Propecia is a prescription-only medication that comes in an oral tablet. It is available in different formulations such as tablets, liquid, and spray.

However, Propecia is a more potent medication that requires more time to take effect, and its long-term use may result in long-term hair loss. Therefore, the potential benefits and risks associated with this medication should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

If you are worried about any side effects of Propecia or Finasteride, I would recommend talking to your doctor before starting treatment with this medication. They can help you manage any side effects and provide personalized advice.

Thanks, Dr. Hathaway. I'll definitely talk to my doctor and find out more about these options before starting treatment with Finasteride or Propecia. It's always good to discuss any concerns or questions about your hair loss or male pattern baldness. In addition, its also a good idea to have a discussion with a doctor about potential risks and benefits of this treatment.
