Medication Information: Proscar (Finasteride)

Uses of Proscar:

In adult men, Proscar is used to decrease an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to alleviate BPH symptoms and possibly avoid surgery. Proscar (Finasteride) may help with BPH symptoms by reducing the need to urinate, improving urine flow with less straining, reducing the sense that the bladder isn't empty, and reducing overnight urination.

This medication works by lowering the quantity of DHT, a natural body hormone that drives prostate growth. Proscar isn't approved for prostate cancer prevention. It may raise the risk of acquiring a very dangerous form of prostate cancer by a small amount.

Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

I am taking finasteride and am a bit concerned about the side effects. I know that I am only getting finasteride at around the same time but what I am experiencing is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed. I am not sure why I am having these side effects. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

I am just starting the Proscar and am having some problems with the 5mg dose. I am experiencing these side effects at the same time I am on the 5mg dose. I am taking propecia as I am taking it for the first time in my life. I am taking the 5mg Proscar and it is working fine, although my blood pressure is not high, it is going down as my body is getting stressed. I am taking propecia at around the same time. I have been taking it for about 2 weeks now. I am taking finasteride as I am on finasteride at the same time and it is working fine. I am taking Proscar about 4 weeks and it seems to have stopped. I am thinking about switching to Propecia and would be able to do the same thing.

I am taking finasteride at around the same time. The issue is it is not working as I am on Proscar and the side effects are going to be a bit more severe. I have been taking it for about 2 weeks now and my blood pressure is not getting high enough. The other thing is my thyroid hormone levels are low and they are increasing and I am getting tired more, I am trying to lose weight but am not sure if this is possible. I am on the 5mg. The side effects are a bit vague but I have tried the 5mg Proscar and the 5mg Proscar and none of them seem to be working. I am wondering if the 5mg Proscar is worth the 5mg dose and if there are any other things that I am doing wrong? I feel a bit worried. Thanks again.

I am on the 5mg Proscar and it is working fine. I am taking finasteride at around the same time, but I am not sure why this is. My thyroid levels are very low, they are just not working anymore. The other things are also not working as I am on the 5mg Proscar and it is getting worse. It seems that my thyroid levels are also getting better as well, but the side effects are not working as well as I expected. Any suggestions?

I will talk to my doctor to find out what is going on and if there are any other things I am doing wrong.
